The purpose of tis program is to reach 5th-9th graders with situations they can relate to. Like HIV and Pride, it focuses on HIV and other STDs as well as teen pregnancy. Facts and figures are given by the presenter and students are basically told the truth.
The presenter has lived with HIV for 27 years and tells his story. In HIV 101 language and understanding are toned to a younger audience. He shows how, no matter what it is, if you have a problem you should ask for help. But most of all, his honest story engages students and keeps their interest!
An Ordinary Kid
This play revised for a younger audience focuses on Billy, who was born with HIV. After stealing his father’s alcohol when he learns his dad is relocating, he turns a birthday party into more. Based on a true story, “Ordinary” shows younger children how even innocent behavior can lead to serious consequences. It engages the students and shows circumstances that can and do happen in their schools.
Questions and Answers
The final feedback – all topics will be explored with students either asking questions of the presenter or of any characters in the play or performance piece. The students will lead the direction of this forum and have a chance to totally interact.
